Another day of pacing. Favorite race. Favorite people. Ugh. Life is good. :)

So many hugs. So many PRs. I was a bit ahead of time and had to stop on the bridge....but I really helped a ton of people. I just love it. And I had the best Pacing Partner in the world. 155:01 for him. :)

Happy Halfsy Day.

2018 Good Life Halfsy; 2:20 Pacer

Just over a week ago I was asked to fill in for an injured pacer, in the 2:20 group; excited (and nervous) to help others get their goal!

I didn't get much practice @ the 10:41 pace; but, set my watch to alert me if going faster than 10:30 and slower than 10:50, and that worked pretty well.

Went faster, by design, at times, so we could walk through the aid stations and spend a little more getting up the couple of hills.

Biggest personal issue was hydrating prior, and during, like I was racing: so, three pitstops BEFORE the race, and three DURING! Whoops.

Luckily, had a co-pacer, and she didn't (seem to) mind holding it down, on her own, for the 30 - 60 seconds I spent TCB. Catching up felt great, to stretch my legs a bit.

Officially came in at 2:19:46; was a little hot the last mile, b/c of excitement, but, reeled it in.

Cheers to everyone involved; another great PG event.

Today didn't go as planned and I'm learning to be ok with that. There were other lessons to be learned. I started today's race with the 1:35 pacer. I had been training hard with my paced runs and although I was concerned that I had no sleep last night due to circumstances beyond my control, I still thought I could power through my run.

But that wasn't meant to be. My first mile was 7:12, my second was 7:08 and I made it through half of the third mile at the same pace before deciding to bag my hopes of a PR. I could continue and be absolutely miserable the whole time, or I could try to find a way to find the joy in today. I slowed down, and that's when the cramping of my calves started in.

So I made a quick phone call to my friend Kayla. "Want a running partner today?" I said. She responded saying she hadn't crossed the start line yet but she'd be running to me. I told her I'd walk until she got to me, knowing that if I kept on, that would also encourage her to keep her pace to get to me.

We kept in contact with each other via text and just before 6.5 miles I heard a cheerful and relieved familiar voice. Kayla, smiling, said "there you are!" We embraced, and fell into step with each other to go after HER goal for today, a time of under 2:30.

And you know what? She got it! 2:27 👊 I'm so proud of her for not letting the negative voice inside her head hold her back. This running thing? It's such a mental thing. There's a reason why Coach Wilken and I tell our runners to run in a pack. They encourage each other to hold it together and accomplish more than they think they can do individually. Getting to see Kayla reach her goal today was worth more than any personal goal or medal.

There were so many things that I took away from today, once I kept reminding myself to find those positives. The biggest? A little girl in a wheelchair holding a sign under an overpass that read EVERY STEP IS A GIFT.

Amen, sister. And today I got to use that gift alongside one of my best friends.

Thanks CJS for making sure I was ok at mile 5ish! Looked like you were having fun!!
