Halfsy fun run. Actually felt like I ran pretty well considering the lack of milez coming into it.

Saw the Jen and Matt pacing duo, Steph, Di, Court, Mel on the course, the Edie's (congrats to Mrs on the PR) and of course daLenz at the finish line.

As my ten year old daughter would say, repping the merch! Good Life Halfsy 2017 - DONE. I got to run this race with my mate Stacy, who is one of my running heroes. I've learned so much from her this last year and she was the icing on the cake today.

I knew I could comfortably run at a 7:40 pace throughout this race today, but I wasn't looking for comfort. I was looking to cross that finish knowing I had given it everything I had. People ask me why I do races when I know I won't win. My answer? Personal excellence. That's my ultimate goal.

We started the race slower, at just under an 8 minute mile and started picking up the pace a little bit with each mile. We left the 1:40 pace group at mile four and kicked it in a bit more. I was striving for 7:20 miles and when we hit a couple miles under that, I cautioned Stacy that we needed to keep our wits about us for at least three more miles. We did just that and planned to run faster when we got to the last 5k.

But when we reached that point, I started to fade. I thought about telling Stacy that this was it, I didn't have anything left in the tank and I couldn't hold the pace or run faster. But then I remembered what we tell our cross country kids. Whether you think you can't, or you think you can, you're right. So I refused to speak those words into existence and instead started to repeat the words of one of my favorite Bible verses in my head, over and over.

I've been saying this same verse in my head while running since I was a teen. Let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. Over and over.

I prayed. I concentrated on the parts of the course I've struggled with in the past and thought of ways I could improve. I thought of how much I've put into my training over the past few years and this last month and how much I've improved. I concentrated on the positive, not the negative. I thought to myself, just 20 more minutes, now just 15, now the last mile, now just a few more minutes. I was hitting my desired pace of 7:15 for these miles after all, but I knew I still had the big hill coming up before the finish.

I did my best to power up that hill, concentrating on my arm swings to power my legs because they were so heavy and dead. I finally made it to the top, exchanged some words with another runner as he said how much that hill sucked as I agreed, and set my sights on the finish. I didn't have my typical kick and sprint to the finish. I had given so much and I was wondering if the legs that I couldn't feel any more were going to hold me up as I crossed that finish that seemed to be growing farther and farther away instead of closer.

But then I thought of our high school cross country runner Kate as she finished at districts. As I watched the look of determination, grit and pain on her face as she went for the finish, knowing she had given all that she had but still needed to give more. I thought of Bree who did the same thing at state as she led her team to the finish at state. How her face had that same look of determination, grit and pain as she also had to dig deeper to make it to the end.

My runners inspire me even when they're not there with me, and I don't expect them to do anything I wouldn't ask of myself. So I dug deep for that finish, as I would ask them to, made it across that finish line, looked at my watch, and confirmed that I had hit that PR. I held my pace. That PR was nearly 30 seconds, more than what I had even hoped for.

Do the thing that you think you cannot do. Make yourself proud in the process. Don't give up. Strive for personal excellence. It is so very worth it.
  • Dan Dan So incredibly happy for you! Brilliant racing and you turned to God when things got rough. Thank you for your inspiration and example! Congrats on the race and PR!

Hip hurt but can't complain because recently it has been much worse. Able to run the whole way without walking and negative splits through 9. After that I was holding pretty close to average pace.
After I finished the sun came out and Ann and I sat on the balcony at the Railyard and had a free beer. Pretty comfortable with my feet up looking out over the Haymarket crowd. Another great race put on by the Pink Gorilla team. Plan to do them all next year.
